Why do you think it is important to learn about Orientalism when we are learning about performance practices from Asia?

In this Unit, we learned about theater and performance practices from China, Japan and Korea .  Although these practices still exist today, they originated in the past and it is easy to imagine this part of the world in a “romantic” way that keeps it locked in the past and keeps it locked in our perspective as US Americans.  This is why I wanted us to watch  David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly – which engages with Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
