Hollywood has recently made a big push into examining the historical reality of American slavery, the Civil War and the modern civil rights movement. The films on American slavery are based on primary source material, including the Confessions of Nat Turner (1831) and the Solomon Northup autobiography. 12 Years a Slave. While the films are not primary sources, they do play a powerful role in shaping how we today think about the era of antebellum slavery.
