Despite the progress made since the civil rights movement, the risk of expressing or engaging in microaggression has the risk of creating conflicts between culturally diverse groups. The best approach would be to engage in culturally competent training and gain insight into ways to accommodate and preserve diverse cultural norms and beliefs. I have an experience that I would like to share in class. Interesting that while studying this course I had an experience that required me to review my class notes. The instructor of a training tried to say that cultural competence is that if most of the team is a Mexican example, the one who arrives from another place in another country must learn to be the same or return to his ranch. This happens here in the United States, where he also says that if you are not equal, you should return to your ranch. To be culturally competent it is necessary to understand one’s own culture and want to learn about other people’s ways of understanding the world and cultural practices. The class would like to know his reactions to this. Also showing interest in learning about other cultures to have diversity. Is cultural competence well defined? Could we see a case of discrimination based on race or ethnicity? How does this make you feel? How do you relate it to the pervasive racism?
