This outline is meant as a guide, not a contract. If your essay changes after youve made your outline, thats okay. Your assignment will consist of two parts: 1. A brief outline that includes thesis statement, topic sentences, and supporting evidence youre planning on using 2. An annotated list of three (3) sources youre planning on using in the paper You will submit both parts as a single document by 11:59pm on June 1. Outline Your outline should follow the plan and sample on pages 2-3 of this document. It must be written in full, grammatically correct sentences. Any supporting evidence should be properly formatted (quotation marks for quotations, APA in-text citations). This part of the assignment is worth 5% of your overall grade (rubric available on D2L). Annotated Bibliography Your annotated bibliography will include three sources you plan to use in your essay. For each source, you will provide APA citation information (References list entry and in-text citation), and a one-sentence statement about how you plan to use the source (ie., which of your ideas will the information support?). In addition, you will provide a brief summary (100-word max) that should capture the major ideas in the source. If youre summarizing scholarly research, the summary should tell readers what the researchers did and what they learned. Follow the template and sample on page 4 (youll need to create three in total). This part of the assignment is worth 10% of your overall grade (rubric available on D2L). OUTLINE TEMPLATE (Add a Descriptive/Creative Title for the Essay Here) Introduction Attention Grabber: Background Info/Context: (2-3 pieces; include in-text citations) Thesis Statement: Body Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence: Evidence: (at least two pieces; include full in-text citations) Body Paragraph 2 Topic Sentence: Evidence: (at least two pieces; include full in-text citations) Body Paragraph 3 Topic sentence: Evidence: (at least two pieces; include full in-text citations) Body Paragraph 4 (if you need it) Topic Sentence: Evidence: (at least two pieces; include full in-text citations) Conclusion Re-worded thesis: OUTLINE SAMPLE **This sample has been shortened. Your outline should contain 3-4 body paragraphs** The Consequences of the Promotion Dieting and Weight Loss in Overweight Adolescents Introduction: Background/Context: (2-3 points; include citations if necessary) – Children who are encouraged to exercise and eat healthy for weight loss purposes are prospectively associated with higher concern about weight and higher BMI, proving that dieting and restriction are counter-productive (Davison, 2010). – For a developing brain and body, dieting and weight loss can have serious implications on the immature adolescent who is undergoing rapid social and psychological development (Findlay, 2004). Thesis Statement: Diets and weight-loss plans are actually harmful to children in teens because they can lead to eating disorders, growth deceleration, and long-term health consequences. Body Paragraph 1: Topic Sentence The promotion of weight loss dieting for an adolescent promotes disordered eating, self-esteem issues, and lifelong struggle with mental health. Evidence (at least two pieces; include full in-text citations) – The encouragement of weight loss creates body dissatisfaction and promotes disordered eating, which leads to unhealthy eating patterns such as skipping meals and binge eating (Davison, 2010). – During adolescent years, lifestyle habits are established and children are vulnerable to learning these unhealthy habits the come with the promotion of dieting and weight loss (Findlay, 2004). – In Davisons study, by restricting childrens access to specific foods to promote weight loss is associated with greater consumption of the restricted foods when opportunity arises (Davison, 2010). Conclusion: The consequences of dieting and weight loss in adolescents are far greater than the positives. The pressure to lose weight during adolescents teaches the child disordered eating, decelerates growth, and leaves them with long-term health problems. Somerset makes the case for controlling the sale of assault rifles based on the risk they pose. He then summarizes the recent history that brought about Canadas current situation, and observes growing pressure on government to deregulate common assault rifles. He critiques arguments that magazine regulation will help keep people safe and closes with a warning about future mass shootings.
