Topic
You will analyze U.S. Open Door policy in one specific region of the world (Latin America & the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, or the Middle East) during the 20th century. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the US has conducted interventions in many countries around the world to maintain an Open Door for US hegemony (indirect control). Foreign interventions can range from psychological operations to discredit foreign governments to supporting armed rebels or coups d’état to full-scale military invasions. Some countries have been subject to multiple U.S. foreign interventions. You will decide whether the Open Door policy has had an overall positive impact, negative impact, or mixed results in your chosen region.
Requirements
1. The essay should be 3-4 pages, single-spaced, 12pt Arial or Times New Roman, 1″ margins.
2. The essay should be divided into five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
3. The introduction should end with a thesis statement (main idea) that clearly states that the overall impact of US policy in the region was positive, negative, or mixed.
4. The body of the essay should describe three specific examples of interventions in different countries that support your thesis (Nicaragua and Afghanistan are excluded). Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that makes a specific point and the rest of the paragraph should elaborate and explain that point.
5. The conclusion should begin by restating the main idea of the essay, but instead of simply summarizing or reviewing the main points of the essay, you should discuss what lessons we can learn or understanding we can gain from your study of the Open Door policy in that region that might help us deal with the issues we face today. Discuss any other ideas you think are important to consider.
6. You will use at least two different sources in each body paragraph (six total). You will use Chicago style endnotes and bibliography to document your sources.
