Technique of persuasion

Technique of persuasion

Instructions:
Find, document, and analyze a “technique of persuasion” that relates to the issues
raised in class.
Some examples:
*a commercial or ad campaign that uses affective marketing/lovemarks
* a commercial or ad campaign that illustrates the tensions/paradoxes of gender, race,
environmentalism, or other social issues as they manifest in consumer culture
*a social media marketing/branding strategy
*content marketing (experiential, content creation)
*a social media influencer (on social networking site, video game, simulated world)
*innovative product placement/integration in a media text (tv show, film, online world) or
in the world.
Use an example that covers more than one substantive course topic. For
instance, this could be an influencer who uses lovemarks, or a product integration
strategy that involves interactivity, or a persuasive design feature that is supposed to
create an experience, etc.
Whatever you choose, you’ll need to upload some documentation of it: it could be a
picture you take yourself, a link to a commercial, a screenshot, etc. You can use an
example you brought up in discussions, but don’t use an example brought up in
lectures.
Then write a 500-word analysis that interprets and evaluates the example in light of
course themes. You will need to show critical analysis and synthesis of course issues as
applied to your choice of topic/situation/ad. Note: You can repeat general topics from
previous exam essays but it must be new/different analysis.
Cite at least three course readings or videos.
Demonstrate your understanding of your chosen course concepts through your analysis
(don’t just use a term briefly as an example and not integrate it into the analysis–though
you can do that with additional terms to support your arguments).
Some questions to spur your analysis:
? How is the technique trying to break out of the clutter of ads and other
marketing techniques?
? How is the technique trying to capture its audience?
? What kind of interactive relationship is it trying to establish?
Important to include:
? What other issues and values are at stake here (privacy, labor, content
confusion, social relationships)?
? How does this relate to consumer culture more broadly?
Must use proper citations but any formal citation style you prefer (MLA, APA, etc.) is
fine.
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on what you have learned over the course
of the semester about militarization.
First, you must put together all your citations from the reference journals throughout the
semester into one giant list.
Second, you must write a 1,000 word introduction to your reference list where you do
the following:
? Discuss how militarization affects your life and community
? Make reference to at least five citations from the class
? Discuss what you found most useful about this class
You will write a 4-5 page reflection paper (double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman) on
your level of power and privilege related to your social media footprint. Critically analyze
your pages (Instagram, VSCO, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. – even your Spotify and
Netflix accounts) and reflect on what you are outputting into the digital sphere, as well
as if/how they are related to gender, race, and sexuality. How would someone who does
not know you interpret them? What is there and what is missing? How and who are
surveilling your social media pages? How do your levels of privilege bleed through your
posts? How do you curate what and when to engage in your digital persona? What
conclusions can you make from your analysis? This paper will act as your final.
