Step 1: Select a setting in which you can complete a one-hour observation of infants and toddlers. This can be done in a public, private or in-home center. Please note, a facility director or supervisor must authorize all observations. Write detailed notes (that include specific examples) on the physical environment to include:
Evidence of a safe environment
Evidence of a healthy environment
Evidence of a learning environment
Evidence that the staff’s goal is to advance physical and intellectual competence of infants and toddlers
Look for evidence that the program supports social and emotional development and that staff members provide positive guidance and discipline with infants and toddlers
