Ethical leadership as portrayed in the media can sometimes be elusive. However, history proves that the most successful leaders also exhibited ethical behaviors or styles of leadership (Yukl, G., 2013). The critical point explored in the textbook that most connects to my current work environment is that of Authentic Leadership. Authentic leadership is based on the psychology of self-regulation and includes leadership traits such as positive core values, honesty, and fairness. As Yukl states, one who is an authentic leader motivates by self-improvement and is most likely less defensive when it comes to learning from mistakes (Yukl, G., 2013). I have made many mistakes as a leader; some outlined in my previous posts. I do take pride in the fact that I can take ownership and learn from them. Both actions are essential traits of an authentic leader.
The fact that I am writing about different types of leadership shows how impactful this course has been for me. Before the start of the class, I would have told you that I knew a lot about leadership theory. After all, I’ve read several books and taken courses on servant leadership as well as situational leadership theories. Now I know there are many more theories to consider. I’ve learned which ones I gravitate to and which would not suit my organization or me. I’ve also learned that you don’t have to practice just one. No single approach must work for every person, team or culture. I have learned this from all the reading we did, but one sticks out as a favorite. It’s an article from Johns & Moser (1989). Although it is slightly dated, it does a great job of summarizing all the theories we learned about here. I intend to keep it handy as a reference because if I learned nothing else, it was that a good leader must keep learning and evolving.
