The client, a 40-year-old Hispanic female, Maria*, was upset because her husband verbally abuses their
children when he is disciplining them.
The situation is troubling me. After we had a few meetings together, Maria canceled other
appointments with me at the last minute. I am concerned that either I did or said something that
offended Maria or that she might be in danger.

I recall my father verbally abusing me and I still feel the effects of his criticism in my self-doubt. I really
want to help Marias children avoid the lack of self-esteem Ive experienced because of a verbally
abusive father. I may have come across too strongly in my conversations with Maria. I even might have
seemed judgmental toward her, because I know how hurtful verbal abuse can be to a child and I want
her to better protect her son.
Client Progress
Because Maria has canceled her sessions with me, I am concerned that I have lost my ability to help her
and that she might eschew all contact with social workers or therapists for future assistance. I dont
know if Maria has made the type of progress she wanted to make, and this worries me. I think I might
have gotten away from our agreed-upon intervention because of my own feelings and judgments.
Specific Observations of Client or Family
Maria sounded nervous and scared when she called to cancel her session, talking in a soft and low
voice. Based on her constrained comments and lack of explanation or details, I would conclude she was
anxious and worried.

According to Ingram (2007), women who have abusive partners are often very concerned about their
partners finding out that they are seeking help because of possible negative consequences, so we
decided that it would be best if I did not try to contact Maria.
I will continue to implement a solution-focused, strengths perspective to help Hispanic female survivors
of domestic violence connect with their own resourcefulness and power to bring positive changes to
their lives (Lee, 2007, p. 102).
I felt very guilty that I might have so negatively impacted my relationship with Maria. My supervisor

and I talked about this. I decided that I would repeat affirmations that I will learn from this situation
and do my very best to not repeat the same behaviors or attitudes in future interactions with clients in
abusive relationships.
Based on several sources, including literature on domestic violence (Lipsky, 2016, p. 19), input from my
supervisor, the knowledge that I made a mistake and that I will do my best not to repeat it, and seeking
wisdom from my pastor when I go to church on Sunday, I will continue to improve my social work
practice.
The competencies and skills I addressed include demonstrating professional and ethical behavior
(although I may have acted unprofessionally and unethically with Maria, I am learning how to improve);
engaging with individuals; using reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and improve
professionalism in practice; applying self-regulation and self-awareness to manage the influence of
personal biases and values when working with diverse clients; assessing feedback from supervision and
consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior; demonstrating character, scholarship, and
leadership in becoming a world changer through application of course content to personal life and
professional social work practice; and demonstrating Christ-like attitudes, values, worldviews, and
ethical and professional behavior within advanced clinical practice.

Professional Growth and Next Steps
I decided to volunteer at a battered womens shelter so that I can participate in the shelters training
and work with more women and their children (or male victims if they are also served by the shelter). I
also will read more literature on working with people who are in abusive relationships, specifically
focusing on research on how social workers can improve their work and interactions with those in
abusive relationships. Murdaugh (2004) states that violence is a significant health issue for Latinas in
the United States, with 54.9% reporting violent victimization. Committing to learn more about this
important issue can increase my ability to help this vulnerable population.

might you do differently in the
future?

Do you need more
information, knowledge, or

will you find it (e.g., in the
literature, from a colleague, or
from a supervisor)?
?
What goals, plans and
professional responses are
needed future interventions
and how do they fit with the
clients goals?
?
What questions will you follow
up with your supervisor on
regarding this case?
I believe that through all of these actions (especially by volunteering, talking things through, and being
present in group meetings with the shelter residents), Ill improve my responses, focus on effective
interventions, and hopefully address my own feelings about having been verbally abused by my parent
and be able to lessen my reaction to similar situations with clients (reduce countertransference, in
other words).
Two Questions for Supervision (Identify follow-up questions to be addressed with your field
instructor based on this interaction.)
1.
When was a time that you perhaps noticed your own bias interfering with best practices with a
client, and what did you do to correct that? How do you think both the bias and the correction
impacted your client?
2.
Are there specific cultural issues that I should be more aware of when working with domestic
violence victims from diverse groups?
What will you do differently based on your review, feedback or research?
