Forms of content
Find an example of Pavlik’s (2014) Form IV: Original content designed for the digital
domain. How does it compare to a similar type of content that’s type I, II, or III? How
does Form IV change the audience/producer model? Is there a “good” balance that can
be achieved by integrating the various Forms of content?
Instructions
Blogs are an integral form of digital media today whereby anyone can be both a
consumer and producer (creator) of blog content. In this assignment, students will
explore the blogs of other writers who are tackling issues of new digital media.
For this assignment, students may investigate and select ONE of the following
media-focused blogs to critique:
http://techcrunch.com/
http://mashable.com/
http://blog.gizmodo.com/
http://www.engadget.com/
http://yro.slashdot.org/
http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/
http://www.niemanlab.org/
Examine at least 10 entries on the same blog on related topics. Write a 2-4
page critique of the blog posts with a title page (not included in page count). The
body of the paper should be double-spaced (if 4-page) or single-spaced (if 2-page)
and formatted according to the APA Style guidelines. Be sure to write in the first
person (use “I”) instead of third person (he/she/they/we). In addition, in place of a
‘References’ page at the end, please list the blog site and the ten individual blog
posts you are critiquing – Titles of each blog entry with URL links to the specific
entries referenced in your writing. Please note that there are APA guidelines for
citing websites on reference pages.
The Blog Critique will be graded based on the Blog Critique Rubric
In your paper, address the following key questions:
1. Write a summary of the overall ‘content’ of the 10 posts (related topic).
2. How well did the blog posts adequately cover the topic(s) at hand?
3. What is the role of the author(s) – critic? evangelist? journalist?
4. Who is the intended audience?
5. Were there any evident biases in the blog posts? If yes, please give
examples.
6. What are three positive aspects of the author(s)’ blog posts overall?
7. What are three suggestions for improving the blog posts overall? (e.g., in
terms of coverage, fairness, depth, grammar, accuracy, etc.)
Comments are to focus on the substance of the blogs from an objective viewpoint
(not personal attacks). Please explain your views with a strong rationale, evidence,
and examples, as well as connections made to course readings and contemporary
topics, where possible.
Regarding the blog post design, you must submit a 700 word post about the first blog
post you picked in the blog design.
Blog Post 1: Impacts of IPV and forms of IPV
In this blog post, I will use a video to explain the impacts of IPV including physical abuse
such as injuries. Also, I will discuss actions that persons suffering from IPV can take to leave an
abusive relationship.
