Cuyamaca College Conflict in Families Discussion & Responses

Cuyamaca College Conflict in Families Discussion & Responses

Chapter 11: For many, conflict is considered a negative experience and an indication that something has gone wrong.  When viewed from that perspective it frequently creates interactions that leave us feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. Is there a way out?   To begin, watch this video:  Respond to the following questions: What are some of the metaphors used by the speaker to describe conflict? Which one did you connect with best? Why? Conflict has the power to transform, if we look at conflict _________________.  Do you agree or disagree with this claim? Why? What are the ‘three keys’ to looking at conflict differently? Briefly explain what each of these keys mean according to the speaker. The speaker created the acronym VOCAB to help you think about how you can be responsible in your conflict and how you can create the change that you want. What does each letter stand for? Briefly explain each word in the acronym according to the speaker. Based on the entire presentation, what advice will you try the next time you get into a conflict situation with a significant other? You can earn a total of 10 points per discussion board: 5 points maximum for your original thread posting and 5 points maximum for your response to 2 or more other student’s postings:  Original threads/posts should be at least 400 words total and have a least 2 textbook reference from the specified chapter. You will have 1 reference per original DB post. Each of the two peer responses should be at least 150 words each in length and have a least 1 textbook reference from the specified chapter. You will have a textbook reference in each of your peer response posts. textbook is Adler, Rosenfeld & Proctor. Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication (14th Ed.) Each of the two peer responses should be at least 150 words each in length and have a least 1 textbook reference from the specified chapter. You will have a textbook reference in each of your peer response posts. 1.Some of the metaphors that the speaker used to describe conflict are ‘a volcano about to erupt’ or ‘a tornado’ or ‘a foot stepping on shattered glass’ which are perfect in describing the destructive nature in people bumping heads. I feel the right metaphor for conflict depends on the situation. A conflict between two mutually silent people could be ‘a volcano about to erupt’ because they could eventually explode on each other. A conflict with the whole family could be a whole tornado tearing apart each person one by one with everyone constantly alert. I believe conflict does have the power to transform if we see conflict. It’s almost like a raging war where one side is constantly fighting to win and beat the other, ‘All conflicts look as if one person’s gain would be another’s loss’ (Ch. 11, pg. 325). We care so much about winning and gaining the benefit of the conflict when it is just making us look worse in the end. Conflict has the power to transform if we see it as an opportunity to become stronger in our relationships. If we use conflict in a meaningful way, it can empower us to change and be prepared to act out when the same problem occurs again. I agree with this claim because it shows the other side of people and what really makes them vulnerable. If we know what makes people vulnerable, we can be better prepared for next time when the same problem arises again and take more careful precautions about what we say or how we act. It is as said by the speaker ‘ a chrysalis of change, a doorway to opportunity and the first ray of light in a dark night.’ The ‘Three Keys’ that the speaker says is: to recognize what our conflict is about, it could be a misunderstanding or a dissatisfaction about a certain situation. The second key is recognizing when we are stuck in a conflict and we don’t know how to act at the moment. When we see that our solutions for resolving it are not working for us, we need to act on doing more changes within that conflict to keep it moving. The third key is to start speaking responsibly, meaning to become vulnerable and understand those who are also affected by this conflict. The acronym VOCAB stands for Vulnerability Ownership, Communication, Acceptance, and Boundaries. The V stands for Vulnerability, to share feelings and allow for a tense-free environment. The O stands for Ownership, which is to be aware of one’s own decisions and path that lead to the conflict and how it can lead out of it. The C stands for communication, which is the skill used during conflict to understand others and how they feel about the situation. The A stands for Acceptance, which is not allowing the conflict to escalate and forgiving the cause of it. It is inevitable that every relationship has conflicts, and we need to accept it and be ready for when it comes again. B stands for Boundaries and respecting the needs of the other people and making sure the same conflict doesn’t happen again when we understand those boundaries. The next time I engage in a conflict, I will try to improve on my understanding for the other person and to recognize the truth that I take responsibility for this conflict even though it might not have been my fault. Doing so will accelerate the healing process of a conflict and make the protective shield from it even stronger than before. 2.Some of the metaphors used by the speaker to describe conflict are ‘a volcano that’s about to erupt’, ‘a hurricane’, ‘like slow dancing barefoot on broken shards of glass’, ‘trying to hold back the ocean with a broom’, ‘war’, ‘the plague’ and ‘being drawn and quartered’. Before explaining one of the metaphors, let’s first define conflict. Conflict is defined in the textbook as ‘an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals’ (11,325). I think I could connect best with the metaphor that conflict is like a volcano that’s about to erupt. When there is conflict, we get this feeling that it will soon blow up in our faces. It will soon turn out to be bad. And when it does, we can’t control what happens or what we are going to say. This is just like a volcano. We know that it will erupt soon enough, but we don’t know exactly when. And it when it does, it is out of our control. Conflict has the power to transform if we look at conflict differently. I agree with this claim. I think it really does depend on our perspective. If we look at a conflicting situation as completely negative, it is going to affect our mood and our mindset. If we continuously think negatively about a small conflict such as who is doing the dishes, then we will keep that negative mindset and end up repeating the situation over and over again. This is called serial arguments, which are ‘repetitive conflicts about the same issue’ (11,338). I think if we understand why we are having a conflicting situation and we try to understand and put reasoning behind our viewpoint and the other person’s viewpoint, it will make our opinion on conflict much better. The first key to looking at conflict differently is to recognize what that conflict is actually about. Canfield uses the example of having a conflict over the dishes. And this conflict wasn’t actually about the dishes, it was about either wanting independence, for wanting to be respected, or to teach responsibility. The second key to looking at conflict differently is to recognize when you are stuck. When we are in conflict, we tend to believe that we don’t need to change, the other person does, and this makes it so we repeat the conflict time and time again, making us stuck. The third key to looking at conflict differently is to begin speaking responsibly. This means having conversations that allow us to create change in ourselves. In order to do this though it requires a few things that fit into the acronym VOCAB, which stands for vulnerability, ownership, communication, acceptance, and boundaries. Vulnerability is a person’s willingness to be seen. Ownership is when a person takes accountability for their own emotions, choices, and needs. Communication is the way that we listen, express ourselves, and ask. Acceptance is ’embracing reality and letting go of what we can’t control’. Boundaries are ground rules that let others know what you are and aren’t okay with. The next time I get into a conflicting situation with a significant other, I will try to understand the reasoning for the situation. I will try to understand what is actually going on in the relationship and not let it ruin my day. I am going to try and not look at that conflicting situation as such a negative thing.  Explanation & Answer: 2 responses 150 words each Tags: conflict families professional lives User generated content is uploaded by users for the purposes of learning and should be used following Studypool’s honor code & terms of service.

Reference List: Basic Rules

Note: This page reflects the latest version of the APA Publication Manual (i.e., APA 7), which released in October 2019. The equivalent resource for the older APA 6 style can be found here.

This resource, revised according to the 7th edition APA Publication Manual, provides fundamental guidelines for constructing the reference pages of research papers. For more information, please consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, (7th ed.).

This page gives basic guidelines for formatting the reference list at the end of a standard APA research paper. Most sources follow fairly straightforward rules. However, because sources obtained from academic journals carry special weight in research writing, these sources are subject to special rules. Thus, this page presents basic guidelines for citing academic journals separate from its “ordinary” basic guidelines. This distinction is made clear below.

Note: Because the information on this page pertains to virtually all citations, we’ve highlighted one important difference between APA 6 and APA 7 with an underlined note written in red.

Formatting a Reference List

Your reference list should appear at the end of your paper. It provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the paper. Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text.

Your references should begin on a new page separate from the text of the essay; label this page “References” in bold, centered at the top of the page (do NOT underline or use quotation marks for the title). All text should be double-spaced just like the rest of your essay.

Basic Rules for Most Sources

  • All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be indented one-half inch from the left margin. This is called hanging indentation.
  • All authors’ names should be inverted (i.e., last names should be provided first).
  • Authors’ first and middle names should be written as initials.
    • For example, the reference entry for a source written by Jane Marie Smith would begin with “Smith, J. M.”
    • If a middle name isn’t available, just initialize the author’s first name: “Smith, J.”
  • Give the last name and first/middle initials for all authors of a particular work up to and including 20 authors (this is a new rule, as APA 6 only required the first six authors). Separate each author’s initials from the next author in the list with a comma. Use an ampersand (&) before the last author’s name. If there are 21 or more authors, use an ellipsis (but no ampersand) after the 19th author, and then add the final author’s name.
  • Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work.
  • For multiple articles by the same author, or authors listed in the same order, list the entries in chronological order, from earliest to most recent.
  • When referring to the titles of books, chapters, articles, reports, webpages, or other sources, capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and proper nouns.
    • Note again that the titles of academic journals are subject to special rules. See section below.
  • Italicize titles of longer works (e.g., books, edited collections, names of newspapers, and so on).
  • Do not italicize, underline, or put quotes around the titles of shorter works such as chapters in books or essays in edited collections.

Basic Rules for Articles in Academic Journals

  • Present journal titles in full.
  • Italicize journal titles.
  • Maintain any nonstandard punctuation and capitalization that is used by the journal in its title.
    • For example, you should use PhiloSOPHIA instead of Philosophia, or Past & Present instead of Past and Present.
  • Capitalize all major words in the titles of journals. Note that this differs from the rule for titling other common sources (like books, reports, webpages, and so on) described above.
    • This distinction is based on the type of source being cited. Academic journal titles have all major words capitalized, while other sources’ titles do not.
  • Capitalize the first word of the titles and subtitles of journal articles, as well as the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and any proper nouns.
  • Do not italicize or underline the article title.
  • Do not enclose the article title in quotes.
    • So, for example, if you need to cite an article titled “Deep Blue: The Mysteries of the Marianas Trench” that was published in the journal Oceanographic Study: A Peer-Reviewed Publication, you would write the article title as follows:
      • Deep blue: The mysteries of the Marianas Trench.
    • …but you would write the journal title as follows:
      • Oceanographic Study: A Peer-Reviewed Publication

Please note: While the APA manual provides examples of how to cite common types of sources, it does not cover all conceivable sources. If you must cite a source that APA does not address, the APA suggests finding an example that is similar to your source and using that format. For more information, see page 282 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th ed.
