Requirements for a topic:

Topic must be a situation, practice, or business policy (not a legal policy) that involves harm caused to
at least some stakeholders and that seems to pose at least one potential ethical problem.

Topic must be about something pertaining to business.
o Businesses do not include non-profits, NGOs
o Your topic may call attention to a lack of or failure of a piece of legislation but it should allow you
to demonstrate ethical problems rather than purely legal problems.

Broad vs narrow topics, pros and cons
A narrow topic about a very specific situation can help you run a very detailed case study and help keep your
research focused. However, some problems may be so narrow you cannot find information about them. In this
case, you may need to broaden your topic.
Example: Trader Joe’s use of prison labor.
This is a great topic but detailed information about specifics may be inaccessible to the public, which could
prevent me from being able to give a detailed case description. (Note: This is an example; you may be able to
find this information.)
A broad topic can be helpful for looking at larger, systemic problems in business ethics. It can also be helpful
if detailed information about the kinds of problems you want to examine is not available for individual
businesses. However, some topics may be so broad you cannot accurately demonstrate potential ethical
problems with them. In this case, you might consider narrowing your topic or brining in specific examples of it.
Example: Prison labor in business.
This is a broad topic. If I used it, I would draw on data to demonstrate general problems and bring in a couple
of specific examples of businesses using it to help illustrate the potential ethical problems. OR I might consider

II. Case Study 1: Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism asks that we consider all stakeholders to find the greatest benefit and least harm
for the greatest number of people and work toward social happiness and wellbeing.
Utilitarianism would deem Axis Design’s choice to skirt minimum wage increases by splitting into
two businesses an unethical choice for business growth because it benefits the minority of
stakeholders at the expense of the majority.
Axis Designs manipulated loopholes in the law to avoid paying incremental increases to
employees’ minimum wage each year. In addition to leaving employees with less earnings, this
strategy resulted in employees facing reduced hours when local orders lag. The economic
impact of both of these factors entails that employees are not guaranteed a living wage while
the business owners are able to make maximum profits and benefit from an increased labor
pool. Because employees and their families who are also impacted by their wages outnumber
other stakeholders, such as the owners and the local businesses they offer one-time orders to,
we can see that the greatest benefit and least harm for the greatest number has not been
achieved in this case.
To resolve this unethical exploitation, Axis Designs could merge their businesses back into one
and hire all employees on the minimum wage model with annual increases. Doing so would
require that the company stop taking local orders from non-contracted vendors for a two year
period while they recuperate expenses from their expansion but would result in a more ethical
and stable business long-term. In addition to creating maximum benefit for stakeholders and
avoiding unnecessary suffering from low wages, this is likely to increase overall happiness in the
workplace culture and create better team cohesion, which will benefit the business long-term.

Discrimination Against Hiring Or Compensation in The Technology Industry Proposal
Introduction
Discrimination during recruitment or in the workplace’s compensation processes is
widespread in the industry. Businesses frequently have been reported to be discriminatory,
and this may be based on a number of personal attributes, including race, gender, and age,
among others. This discrimination of this kind is thus against the principles of equality,
fairness, and justice and also injures people who get officially discriminated against in terms
of employment or payment. This is my proposal, so my focus here will be on discrimination
against hiring or compensation in the technology industry.
Background
In recent years, the technology industry has been a fast-growing sector that offers
many employment opportunities. Nevertheless, despite the recent rise, the industry has also
been criticized for its poor diversity and lack of inclusivity. As per a 2020 report by the
National Centre for Women & Information Technology, only 26% of the computing
workforce in the United States comprises women, including only 3% being Black women
(Ross et al., 2020). In addition, studies have indicated that women and minority workers are
often paid less than men of the white race performing similar tasks or duties. The tech
industry has diversity and inequality issues as ethical problems.
Ethics of Discrimination in Hiring and Compensation

An ethical issue in the technology industry is the violation of non-discrimination and
fairness, and it requires urgent solutions. Despite the progress this field has achieved, data,
however, shows that still gender and racial discrimination in hiring and remuneration is
prevalent. This indicates that individuals are not treated impartially and paid the job wages
based on their skills and qualities, but rather, their gender and race. Tconflictslict with basic
principles of equality and fairness since all individuals must have access to the same
resources lso be judged by the same criteria regardless of their characteristics. This is not
only unfair to employees, but also the discrimination continues systematically, and the
stereotypes are reinforced as well. Therefore, they are responsible for removing biases and
for giving all people the same treatment.
One more ethical issue is the negative effect on people who have been affected. This
kind of job discrimination prevents people from the opportunity to work or receive less
remuneration, which in turn impacts their stability in financial matters and inclusion in the
workplace (Ross et al., 2020). It can be the cause for the loss of most of the diversity in the
industry. People from marginalized communities may be discouraged by the perceived
obstacles and unbalanced treatment from joining the ing tech sector.
Possible Solutions
To tackle these ethical issues significantly, some possible solutions that technologybased businesses can implement are as follows. One way to do this is to embrace blind hiring
procedures, in which applicant’s personal info, like name, gender, age, and address, is
excluded from applications and interview processes. It may reduce biases and opportunities
to get applicants qualified solely on their skills and qualifications.
One option solution is also to implement diversity and inclusion initiatives that
include diversity training and mentorship programs. Through diversified education and an

inclusive language, businesses will be able to create an equal and welcoming atmosphere for
all workers.
Equal pay for equal work means that individuals who do the same job, possess similar
qualifications, and are of comparable level should receive the same remuneration, regardless
of their gender, race, or any other protected characteristic. It is one of the aspects of justice,
equality, and fairness in an organization, and it is a legal requirement in many countries.
Audits of wages are also important factors in advocating for equal pay. They are usually
comprehensive audits that entail a detailed comparison of the business practices involving
employees’ compensation to establish any variations in gender or race. Furthermore, it is also
possible to increase payment transparency to encourage equal pay. This, therefore, implies a
need to communicate clearly to the employees the company’s pay structure and how a given
salary is based (Xiao, 2021). This can be beneficial to employees when they get to understand
where they stand in terms of pay for the same position as colleagues and also gives them the
chance to share any complaints on issues of unfair pay.
Examining the issue of Discrimination against contenders
By looking at the problem from the point of view of job seekers, discriminatory
practices during hiring can cause very serious negative consequences like not getting a job,
being hired for lower-paying jobs, or even getting fired. Discrimination, in this case, can be
intentional. If the hiring manager has prejudices or unintentional, such as when the system is
biased and systemic issues exist in the organization. Moreover, it affects employees who are
already on the payroll as they may be discriminated against when they are promoted, awarded
salary increments, or receive another form of career advancement. Employers might be
inadvertently receiving this kind of discrimination, and their lack of awareness or failure to
put fair and unbiased hiring and compensation policies in place, which might not be good.

has the potential to violate the norms of fairness and equality among job seekers and
employees (Cook, 2020). Furthermore, employers are likely to ignore the efforts related to
diversity and inclusion in order to save money, which is a threat to society being united in its
perception of equal and fair employment opportunities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, discrimination in hiring or compensation is a significant ethical
problem in the technology industry. It not only goes against the principles of fairness and
equality but also has a negative impact on individuals and the industry as a whole. To address
this issue, businesses must implement strategies such as blind hiring, diversity and inclusion
initiatives, and regular pay audits to promote equal treatment and diversity in the workplace.
By doing so, the technology industry can work towards creating a more ethical and inclusive
environment for all employees.
