Theme 1: Knowledge Sharing and Communities of Practice

Knowledge and their evolution into an organization is a social phenomenon. This week we will discuss the ways an organization shares knowledge or learns information an its implications in the KM cycle.

Organizational learning is the way a group creates new knowledge to improve its effectiveness. Brown and Duguid (1991) describe organizational learning as “the bridge between working and innovating.” The thought being that learning is linked to action and hopefully useful improvement.

The implications this has for KM are three-fold:

· KM managers must understand how to create the ideal organizational learning environment.

· KM managers must be aware of how and why something has been learned.

· KM managers must try to ensure that the learning that takes place is useful to the organization.
