STUDENT 1: Stephanie
In the scenario video, a team of teachers are meeting to discuss a new requirement for collecting and inputting data for students with IEPs. In the video, the director of special education and principal tell the teachers about the new process and program. The leaders are met with a lot of questions and concerns. The leaders discuss that they know there will be a learning curve, but once the staff learns the process the new method and program will be worth it (Walden University, 2016b).
As educators we are also lifelong learners. According to Fullan and Quinn (2016) the 6 competencies (6Cs) can deepen our learning and understanding. The 6Cs are: communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, character, and citizenship. If I were a leader in our video scenario, I would use the 6Cs to enhance learning and pedagogical practices.
Here is how I would implement the 6Cs into our learning plan.
Communication
One way to gain coherence through communication is to use a range of communication modes. In order to enhance learning for educators, I will present the new process steps in multiple ways. I will communicate the steps verbally and visually. The teachers will hear me walk through the steps of the process and will also receive a powerpoint with step by step directions and images for the steps.
Critical Thinking
Experimenting, reflecting and taking actions are a crucial part of deepening ones learning. In order to enhance pedagogy, I will give all teachers time to experiment with the new program for inputting student data. We will experiment and reflect on our experiments in multiple ways. We will first experiment with the program together in a meeting. We will also take time to reflect on our experience and listen to ideas for actions that could help us implement the program. We will also experiment independently. The teachers will be asked to bring their reflective thoughts to the next meeting. At the meeting we will discuss action steps that need to be taken to improve the implementation of the program.
Collaboration
Collaboration is a key to deepening one’s learning. One form of collaboration that will deepen learning is working interdependently as a team. In order to ensure team collaboration throughout the implementation of the new program, I will divide the staff into 2 or 3 teachers per collaborative team. The team will be responsible for helping each other out and collaborating with each other when one of their team members is having a hard time. The team will be able to lean on each other for help and can always report to me as their leader, if need be. However, I want them to know the value of their team members’ knowledge and skills.
Creativity
Creativity is another way to deepen learning. According to Fullan and Quinn (2016), creativity can be reached by considering and pursuing novel ideas and solutions. For this reason, I will always give teachers time to share their ideas each time we meet. If teachers are afraid to share their ideas or thoughts out loud they will have a parking lot option. The parking lot will be a large post-it note on the back wall of the meeting room. Teachers will always be welcome to write their ideas or thoughts on the parking lot to be discussed.
Character
Our personal character can play a big role in our success in learning new things. Part of the character traits needed to deepen learning is grit, tenacity, perseverance, and resilience. In order to inspire teachers to have these character traits throughout this process, I will start out each of our meetings with a short inspirational quote or video that strengthens these traits.
Citizenship
Citizenship is all about being respectful and understanding of others thoughts, feelings, and emotions. In order to show citizenship during our meetings, I will be a leader that is willing to listen to everyone’s concerns and opinions. I will also keep an open mind and will realize that everyone is coming from a different place. Not everyone will have the same perspective either. I will remind myself and all members of the team to respect each other’s thoughts and feelings.
Assessing Student Progress
Assessing student progress will be discussed as a group. However, the following would be part of our list for assessments to include for collecting student data:
·Benchmark Assessments (MAP Tests)
·Observations
·Anecdotal Notes/ Data Collection
·Standard Assessments

STUDENT 2: ANGELA
The third component of the coherence framework is deepening learning (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Deepening learning involves using new knowledge to solve real-life problems and incorporate various skills and attributes (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Furthermore, the deep learning competencies or better known as the 6 Cs are communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, character, and citizenship (New Pedagogies, 2019). According to Fullan & Quinn, establishing clarity of deep learning goals, building precision in pedagogies accelerated by digital, and shifting practices through the capacity building are elements that deepen learning.
To build precision, schools, districts, and governments must first be clear about the learning goals (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Clarifying roles and objectives is very critical for effective teams. The purpose of clarifying the goal is to ensure that everyone involved in the learning process understands what to do, how to do it, and the results expected (Wahbi, 2023). Therefore, as a leader, I would communicate the plan, policies, and role expectations of all stakeholders. In following the example set by Park Manor Senior Public School, I would make sure the goal is clear and concise, and shared by everyone.
Additionally, I would clearly explain the goal and explain the why behind the goal. Explaining why helps build a stronger sense of teamwork and trust and respect (The Importance of Explaining Why, 2023). Also, in checking for understanding, I would have each team member communicate the goal back to me. Finally, I would address concerns and provide any additional instructions.
To build precision in pedagogy, instructional systems must develop four components: build a common language and knowledge base, identify proven pedagogical practices, build capacity, and provide clear causal links to impact. The first step in building precision in pedagogical practice begins with a culture that fosters learning for all (Fullan & Quinn, 2016).
Using the 6s
The 6 Cs provides an advanced organizer for thinking about deep learning competencies as identified by Fullan’s new pedagogies for deep learning (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). As aforementioned, the 6 Cs are communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, character, and creativity. The purpose of the 6 Cs is for the well-being of the whole student, the group, and society (Fullan & Quinn, 2016).
Communication involves using a range of modes and is designed for different audiences (Fullan & Quinn, 2016).
Leaders must present information in a clear, concise, and meaningful way.
Critical Thinking involves questioning, analyzing, interpreting, and making a judgment about what is read, heard, said, or written (What is Critical Thinking, 2023). Furthermore, critical thinking involves problem-solving.
Collaboration is working together for the same goal. Furthermore, collaboration is the skill of utilizing various personalities, talents, and knowledge to create a maximum outcome.
Creativity is characterized by asking the right inquiry questions and considering and pursuing novel ideas and solutions. Leaders must be able to create something new or create something in a new way, utilizing the knowledge they have already acquired.
Character- refers to qualities of the individual essential for being personally effective in a complex world.
Citizenship is a global perspective and addresses understanding diverse values and worldviews.
In using the 6 cs to deepen learning for the staff in the case study, as a leader, I will continue to communicate effectively and create opportunities for team members to collaborate. For example, I will create a teacher partnership, where teachers are paired to work together, provide support, and offer feedback. Furthermore, in my role as the leader, I will set the environment for creativity and innovation. For example, the main concern for teachers in the case scenario was the time factor. As a leader, I can enable the teachers to brainstorm and strategize on ways to use their time to implement the new system effectively. This will help the team to stay engaged and motivated in working toward the goal.
Measuring Student Progress
Teachers must measure student progress to determine if the student’s educational goals are met (Coleman, 2021). One way to measure student progress is through informal observations. Observing students throughout the school day can give insight into their learning needs and progress. Furthermore, collecting data through notes and checklists can help keep track of student strengths and needs.
In addition, allowing student self-assessment is another method of measuring student progress. Self-assessment allows students an opportunity to assess their learning and reflect on the progress they are making. As outlined in the student learning model, self-assessments require students to take responsibility for their own learning and understand the learning process (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Furthermore, students can identify their gaps in skills or knowledge, revise their work, and set realistic goals (Eredics, 2018).
