According to research findings, maternal health has to do with womens health from the time of pregnancy, prenatal, and prenatal periods (WHO, 2019). There are proven indications that the maternal mortality rate is high across the globe. Approximately 830 deaths of women are reported related to maternal complications. These cases happen daily globally (WHO, 2019). In Nigeria, maternal mortality is influenced by poor methods of implementing maternal health policies. Other factors related to culture, social and economic practices also play part in increasing the deaths (WHO, 2019).Nigeria has repeatedly over the years ranked as one of the countries that have an alarming maternal mortality ratio. Global estimations show that 14% of maternal deaths are from Nigeria (Gulumbe et al, 2018). These findings proved that the Northern regions of Nigeria, had the highest maternal mortality ratio reaching over 1/100. In Kebbi State, Nigeria, it is reported that 71% of expectant women have no access to antenatal care. Gulumbe. et al, (2018) report that 91% of the women deliver their babies at home while at most 10% of these women are attended to by skilled nurses. This research policy brief gives recommendations for reducing maternal mortality and mortality ratio in Nigeria by identifying ways of alleviating the key drivers of maternal mortality based on research.Part 1: IntroductionThe audienceThis Research Policy Brief is directed to the government, Ministry of Health of Nigeria, which has the authority to develop and execute policies and changes in policies regarding the maternal health and children healthcare system in Nigeria. 3
