Persuasion by Jane Austen Marriage and Courtship Novel Contextual Analysis

Persuasion by Jane Austen Marriage and Courtship Novel Contextual Analysis

You must choose from the following books and incorporated in the paper. Here are a list of the books we read throughout the semester.

Persuasion Jane Austen
Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf
The God of Small Things Arundhati Roy

Directions: Choose a text that we have read in class together and answer the following questions about its historical context and author: How does the context of this book help us better understand its form, content and message? Given her context, was this author outstanding, progressive, or radical? How was the author shaped by her context and how did she (not) overcome it? Was she a woman of the times or beyond the times?
Organization and Research: This essay combines both research and analysis to provide insight into women’s writing. Because of this, it is recommended that you divide your paper into four sections–introduction, contextual background, analysis, and conclusion. Of course, make sure that each section supports a central thesis, and feel free to title each section as you want. Your research should begin with the historical context and/or life of these writers, but you can also research movements in feminist or critical theory and use scholarly analyses of these women writers to situate your argument. Consider unanswered questions in our class discussion as good places to start as well as the course bibliography.
Revision: If you did a contextual analysis for your presentation, you may use this as the rough draft or start of this paper. But, it is expected that your analysis for the paper will be more substantial than the presentation.
Requirements: The essay needs to be approximately 7-10 pages double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font with MLA formatted citations and an original title. It should be focused on one author and one text, although you may make references to other texts written by this author and/or other authors in that are conversation with her. You must also use at least 5 scholarly sources in your paper to either provide context or support your argument.
