2. Gender Just Do It!
According to the social constructionist perspective, gender is not something we are but something we do. Carol Tavris uses the example of writing birthday cards, keeping up with family events, etc., as “kin work,” most often delegated to women. This is something women are generally expected to do in American culture but which men are just as capable of doing. Can you think of other ways in which men and women “do gender”?
3. Gender and Divorce
Some men believe that divorce laws and legal practices have made it more difficult for them to gain custody of or to continue parenting their children after divorce. Is this claim the flip side of the argument that women have a maternal instinct and are better suited to parent than men are? Review the research on child custody awards to see whether mothers are awarded custody more often than fathers. What conclusions do you draw about divorce laws and the legal system?
4. Jealous Much?
What do you think is behind the emotion of jealousy? Why are some people more prone to jealousy than others? Do you think men and women show their jealousy in different ways? If so, can you think of social factors that might account for these differences?
5. Ask a Peer Gender Discrimination

6. Professions
Think of a man who is in a female-dominated professionfor instance, nursing or elementary school teaching. Does his work require that he engage in stereotypically feminine behaviors? If he does his job competently might he risk being judged unmasculine or unmanly? Do you believe that men are discouraged from entering female-dominated jobs? If so, why?
7. Stereotypes and Gender
Think of a woman who holds a high-level position who has been covered by national or local media. Can you identify ways in which the press has attributed characteristics to her because of her gender? Similarly, has she been criticized for behaviors which may not be considered appropriate for a woman? Do you think gender-role stereotyping makes it more difficult for women than men in high-level jobs to manage their image?
