“Union Pacific Corporation” Please respond to the following:
Perform an analysis of the social / demographic, technological, economic, environmental / geographic, and political/legal / governmental segments to understand the general environment facing Union Pacific.
Describe how Union Pacific will be affected by each of these external factors.
PART A PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY: Union Pacific Corporation is one of America’s top transportation suppliers. Connecting 23 states in the Western part of the country including connections to the major West and Gulf coast ports, as well as Canada’s rails and major Mexico gateways, Union Pacific Corporation has over 10,000 customers and is used in the global supply chain (Corporate Info).
Union Pacific Corporation boasts its connection to the Canada rail systems as well as all six major Mexico gateways. As President Trump continues to tariff Mexico and Canada, Union Pacific Corporation could feel the negative impacts of the trade war. Higher tariffs increase the cost to bring goods in, which may result in less product being transported and lower income.
Companies are also noticing a shift in career philosophies of the working generations. As older generations retire and younger generations enter the market, many businesses are struggling to meet the expectations of the Millennial generation. Many Millennials have a strong desire for work-life balance and a need to do something that challenges them, and help improves society. Additionally, Millennials enter the force with large amounts of debt and demand greater pay from employers as a result. The rail company may find it difficult to recruit younger generations. As a result, they have shifted focus to include large community projects to help better society and build up their social responsibility.
New technological advancements in computers and communication technology is making use of the rail systems more efficient and safer. Companies like Union Pacific Corporation can monitor their trains in real-time and adjust deliveries when necessary. This not only makes delivering packages faster, but also cheaper.
Union Pacific Corporation has been keeping up with the country’s many “Green” initiatives. They come in 61st place in Newsweek’s 2017 Green Ranking (Newsweek’s Green Rankings). They are continually working to reduce their carbon footprint and are developing technologies that exceed EPA standards (Environment Operations).
Part B PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY: After finding the Union Pacific website and reading more about them I learned a lot of things.
They have over 10,000 customers, 8,300 locomotives and 42,000 employees. Union Pacific services from all major West Coast and Gulf Ports to eastern ports and gateways. It also connects to the Canada railway system. From a demographic standpoint they reach most necessary places in route.
They also partner with a company called Loup who helps them manage there logistics. This is very important piece of technology to happen. There are many factors when moving freight to consider, like whether or not it needs to stay cold or warm or if the shipment is packed correctly. Also, you need employee people who are engineers and mechanics that can ensure the safety of the trains.
Also, some other factors are that the US government has not put a lot of money into the railroad systems. So they are constantly needed repairs and service. They need to continuously have legislation fighting to protect the railroads.
Some issues they face from the government are people who are trying to pack things like drugs or weapons into these freight trains. They need to be monitored closely especially because they are pikcing up right on the borders of some countries and transported across the country.
