Dr. Edwards Deming, a famous statistician and professor, was keen on pointing out that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. In other words, you must have a baseline of performance before you can determine if it is improving or declining. While this may seem obvious, far too many organizations fail to measure their processes, measure them incorrectly, or measure the wrong indicators. Benchmarking is an important tool to use for performance improvement. An organization can benchmark against themselves (comparing internal departments, past performance, etc.), competitors, or the industry as a whole.
