Module 6: Class Activity Assignment
Activity: Exploring Networking Concepts
Objective:
The objective of this activity is to introduce students to fundamental computer networking concepts.
Students will collaborate to gain an understanding of network components, IP addressing, and resource
sharing. Students will work in groups to create a network diagram. They will share the diagram with the
class and then write a reflection on this activity.
Related Course Learning Outcome: Explore data communications concepts and basic principles of
connectivity including wired and wireless technologies. (CLO #7)
Instructions:
1. Introduction to Basic Networking Concepts
Participate in class session after reading Chapter 6, Networking and Communication, reading the
Internet Basics tutorial on GCFGlobal and watching the video posted in the course on networks of key
networking concepts, covering:
– The significance of networks in modern computing.
– Different types of networks (LAN, WAN, MAN).
– Devices: Computers, laptops, smartphones.
– Essential network terminologies and components (nodes, routers, switches, IP addresses,
etc.).
– IP addressing.
– The role of routers and switches in directing network traffic.
– Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet connections.
2. Collaborative Network Diagramming
Follow instructors directions to divide into small groups. Share personal experiences, challenges, and
insights of interacting with computer networks at home, school, work, etc. Collaborate to create a visual
diagram to represent of a simple home network:
– Include computers/laptops, a router, and connections, printer and other devices.
– Label components and connections.
– Discuss IP addresses for each device within the diagram.
– Share and discuss diagram with entire class. This will be done by replying to this post in the
M6: Class Activity Discussion Networks. Online student will follow your instructors directions to
complete this discussion online. Other sections will present their diagrams during class.
3. Graded Assignment:
1
Write a one-page reflection summarizing the key takeaways from the activity, emphasizing the practical
understanding of basic networking concepts. In the reflection, share your personal experience with
networks you have interacted with at home, school, work or in public. In addition, share your person
experiences, challenges, and insights from the collaborative activity. Finally, discuss ethical
considerations related to networking, including responsible file sharing, respecting privacy, ensuring
secure connections when accessing shared resources and other ethical considerations are you feel are
important. Include citation(s) for any researched sources.
