Week 13 Instructions
Antigone, Sakuntala, OR Hamlet
Antigone starts on page 725, Volume A.
Choose one of the following for your reading response:
Compare and contrast Antigones heroism (and consider the appropriateness of the term in her case) to that of the male and also female characters we have encountered thus far.
Sakuntala starts on page 989, Volume B.
Compare elements of myth, the supernatural, the natural, and of social representation in this work to (a) our readings in the Ramayana, and/or (b) other, non-Indian texts.
Hamlet starts on page 655, Volume C.
Two choices: (A) watch a movie version of the play; discuss a few significant ways the film version affects your understanding of the play itself. (B) Returning to the theme of heroism: Hamlet is a late-stage sort of hero, we can say “ with far more psychological realism in the creation of his character, perhaps, than is true for much older works. Talk about the ways his heroic stance in the play is complicated by the view we have of his interiority (his ways of thinking and feeling), with some reference to characters in earlier works we have read.
For any of the three:

Find one or two passages in the work that seem to crystallize the overall meaning or value of the work for you; or, that seem especially interesting for the imagery, wisdom, rhetorical power, or other memorable quality. Quote and defend your choice in a few sentences.
Browse one or more critical works in the library databases. Quote one passage from the critical work, and in a few sentences tell us why it is helpful in appreciating the primary work.

REMEMBER to write  the minimum required length of 1 page, not including any quotations you use from the primary works or from secondary, critical sources. Also, REMEMBER not to plagiarize, and CITE any sources you happen to use.
