In the late 19th century, psychology emerged as a discipline distinct from philosophy, accompanied by increased efforts to measure and classify human behavior. Psychological testing is one way to measure psychological constructs and behavior. Though testing may be useful in many domains, such as in mental health diagnosis or educational settings, in organizational psychology, the primary catalysts for the development of valid tests of individual differences were the selection and placement of individuals into proper work roles.
