Healthcare team collaboration is essential to improve patient outcomes and increase patient safety (Rosen et al., 2018). Collaboration between team disciplines, such as a physician, nurse, pharmacist, and other team members could improve patient adherence (Rathbone et al., 2016).
In the case of Ms. Faulkenberger, I would review her medical chart including clinical data and medical history to understand the state of health of the patient and her treatment. I would know if she has been experiencing any difficulties during her treatment. This information is important because it could affect her mental state. Understanding her illness experience would increase my empathy to her. Expressing empathy could build patient trust, reduce anxiety, and increase patient compliance. I would contact other team members who had worked with her before. This information would prepare me to work with her effectively. I would ask another nurse to come with me to assist me when I explain and educate her about her treatment plan. When I and another nurse work together to assist her, teamwork could make her feel that we pay attention and care about her. This could increase adherence to medical advice and treatment. When she has concerns about her treatment, I would contact the physician to explain her concerns. I would contact the case manager to arrange transport after the procedure to ensure her safety. I would contact physical therapy to work with her to improve her strength. So that, she would do active daily as much as she could.
