Task: Reply to this topic

Throughout this course, many opportunities are available to post an initial response to a discussion topic as well as to respond to your classmates’ responses. After you have completed the reading, and without reviewing your classmates’ responses, post your initial response to the following discussion. Your post should be at least 200 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group, supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources. After you have submitted your initial post, review some of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your classmates. Refer to your Discussion Board Rubric and the Syllabus for specific grading explanation.

Empathy, Empathy, Empathy!

Empathy is a crucial component of both the professional interview and the client–professional relationship. Before responding, be sure to watch the Empathic Listening video from the reading in this unit.

Please respond to the following:

· Discuss a time when you were trying to express empathy to someone.

· Did you experience any of the “empathic failures” identified in your reading?

· Looking back on the interaction, with what you have learned about empathy, is there anything you would have done differently?

· How did your personal values come into play in the conversation? Did they help or hinder your ability to provide empathy?

My soon to be husband it just getting out of prison and he has a lot of hurtles to get over. He comes to me often with frustrations, hurtles, issues he has with parole, finding a job, and so on. I have no idea how he feels exactly because I have never been to prison and his prison sentence has impacted his family in different ways than it has impacted him. When we have these conversations I just try to listen carefully, ask questions, I look up things he tells me so we can talk about it later, and offer words of encouragement. I support him and let him get it all out in the open so we can come up with a plan to deal with all these things. In my earlier conversations with him I was guilty of no response mostly because i did not know what to say, but with time I have learned more about the issues he was facing. I have also seen his struggles and I have done research so I am now more familiar with the prison system and the issues that can come from being incarcerated.

In the earlier conversations I had with him I would have been more open minded. If I knew then about empathy what I know now, I would have communicated empathy in a better manner. I would have offered supportive responses, gestures, sounds, and/or behaviors (Murphy & Dillon, 2014). I think in the beginning I just looked on in horror at some of the problems he faced or stories he told. My personal views impacted my ability to be empathic somewhat because him being incarcerated impacted my life also, although we did not have the same problems we had problems with his incarceration nonetheless. My experiences impacted how I responded to him at first because he acted like he was the only one that was affected. We have since worked though that and be both understand the others perspective. It was all about communication.

Hello Class,

My husband’s grandpa passed away last week, a few ways I was trying to express my empathy was by anticipating what he might need while he was grieving, it was one way I could show I supported him. I was doing his chores and other task, anything real that he asked me to do. I was glad to help him out he never felt like a burden.

I have experienced emphatic failures Mistaking personal sharing for empathy. The clinician shares an experience similar to the clients with the intention of empathizing, but takes the focus away from the client’s story: “I’ve been there myself.” “That happened to me and I know how you must feel. (Dillion, Page 174) When my sister and her boyfriend broke up, I was trying to be there for her and explained I have been through something about the same but she took it the wrong way and got upset.

With my husband no I would do everything the same with my sister I would have just listen more and just have been there for her instead of trying to relate how she might be feeling.

I like my personal values came into play and they helped after my sister calmed down, she was able to see I was there trying to help and hearing that others have gone through what she was going though helped her.
